World Diabetes Day observed at SKIMS Soura | KNO

SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 14 (KNO) : On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Department of Endocrinology, SKIMS in collaboration with department of Community Medicine and M P PCOS Society organized a day long programme on November 14th, 2017 at SKIMS auditorium with an aim to enhance awareness about diabetes among common masses. In addition participants from SKIMS Nursing College, Central university of Kashmir, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Kashmir and members of civil society attended the programmme. Besides, diabetic patients, Staff from SKIMS, Estates department, Electric department, Photography section and research scholars from various departments attended the programme. The theme of this year’s diabetes day celebration was “WOMEN AND DIABETES: OUR RIGHT TO A HEALTHY FUTURE”. A large number of women participants attended the day long programme that included a series of lectures delivered by eminent experts in the field besides a panel discussion, a quiz, a public interaction and addresses by distinguished guests. At this occasion inaugural issue of The Journal of Medical Missive published by Dr. Ab. Majid Siraj and edited by Dr. M. Ashraf Ganie and Dr. M. Ishaq Geer was released apart from the inaugural issue of the 2nd JK Medical Science Congress/ M P PCOS Society Newsletter by the eminent Gastroenterologist of the Valley, Prof. M. Sultan Khuroo and Dr. Altaf R. Kirmani, Dean Medical Faculty, SKIMS Popular lectures on various issues concerning the theme of the day were delivered by Dr. M. Ashraf Ganie, Dr. Shariq R. Masoodi, Dr. Bashir A. Laway, Dr. Bashir Ahmad Sanai, Dr. Tariq Ahmad Qureshi, Dr. Muzafar Maqsood and Dr. Khalid Mohi ud din. About 250 participants were screened for Diabetes, Hypertension, obesity and PCOS. Panelist for the panel discussion included Prof. M S Khuroo, Dr. Reyaz Ah. Untoo, Dr. M. Ashraf Bhat, Dr. M. Maqbool Wani, Dr. Arshid Iqbal Wani, Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Nikka, Dr. Imtiyaz and Ms. Sakeena Akhter. Various aspects of Diabetes including its causes, effects, management, control and prevention were discussed during various sessions that were very well received by the common masses and the programme was rated as highly beneficial up on feedback. The participants were given certificates of participation and the awards were given for best questions during the public interaction. A quiz competition was also held and awards were distributed. Prof. A.R. Kirmani, Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS and Prof Syed Amin Tabish, Medical Superintendent SKIMS also delivered their address to elucidate measures to tackle epidemic of diabetes. Prof. M. S. Khuroo, moderator and Chief Guest suggested major change in the society to curb the burden of diabetes. He also emphasized on awareness programmers in schools. Organizing secretary of the programme, Dr. M. Ashraf Ganie presented the inaugural and valedictory address and thanked all collaborating departments for their active participation and support (KNO)
